2025 Lunar New Year

FHTMS, South Burlington


Our annual Lunar New Year celebration was held at the cafeteria of Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School in South Burlington on February 2nd. The celebration includes traditional stage performances and new year luncheon. We had about 185 people attended the celebration to welcome the Year of the Snake. VCS was particularly delighted to have Green Mountain Korean Culture School joining the celebration and performed Korean drumming. The afternoon concluded with our VCS Principal distributing red packets to kids and a chorus singing ‘Gong Xi Gong Xi’ (Congratulations – A Happy New Year Song).

2024 Dongzhi Festival was held on December 21st in South Burlington with 30 attendees. Traditionally, this is a time for family to get together. One activity during this festival is the making and eating tāngyuán 汤圆, balls of glutinous rice, which symbolize reunion. We had tangyuan in red bean soup.

2024 Mid-autumn Festival Duanwu was held on September 14th in South Burlington with 76 attendees. We had a traditional riddle solving game 猜灯谜, lighting of lanterns and a parade 提灯笼,游花园. VCS also provided a traditional delicacy, mooncakes 月饼, for enjoyment. Chinese have long believed that worshipping the moon and eating together around a round table will be them good luck and happiness. Chinese also sees the roundness in te mooncakes as a symbol of reunion nd happiness.



2024 DuanWu Festival Celebration Potluck

2024 Duanwu Festival was held on June 8th in South Burlington with 50 attendees. Traditionally, zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings) are eaten during DuanWu. VCS provided samplings of sweet zongzi for everyone's enjoyment. Children participated in Duanwu themed coloring activities and trivia games!

The afternoon concluded with our VCS Principal distributing red packets to kids and a chorus singing ‘Gong Xi Gong Xi’ (Congratulations – A Happy New Year Song).

2023 Dongzhi Festival was held on December 16th in South Burlington with 84 attendees. Traditionally, this is a time for family to get together. One activity during this festival is the making and eating tāngyuán 汤圆, balls of glutinous rice, which symbolize reunion.


We had tangyuan making station and had dongzhi themed bingo.

2023 DuanWu Festival celebration dinner was held on June 17th in South Burlington with 62 attendees. Traditionally, zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings) are eaten during DuanWu. VCS provided samplings of sweet zongzi for everyone's enjoyment. Children participated in Duanwu themed bingo and trivia games!

2023 Winter Cultural Activities: Exploring Chinese Culture with Children, Youth and Adults


2023 Winter Cultural Activities session was held on January 14th in South Burlington with 11 attendees. The activities for this session were "Sesame Balls" 芝麻球, "Spring Festival Chinese Paper Cutting" and "Introductory to Chinese Ink Painting". Everyone had a great afternoon and enjoyed their fried sesame balls. They were also proud of their accomplishment!

2022 DongZhi Festival (Winter Solstice) was held on December 10th in South Burlington with 47 attendees. We made tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) 汤圆.


Traditionally, DongZhi is a time for the family to get together. One activity during this festival is the making and eating of tangyuan, which symbolize reunion.

2022 Summer Cultural Activities: Exploring Chinese Culture with Children, Youth and Adults


2022 Summer Cultural Activities session was held on July 9th in South Burlington with 14 attendees. The activities for this session are "Dumpling Wrapping", "Introductory to Chinese Ink Painting" and "Chinese Paper Cutting". Everyone had a great afternoon and enjoyed their own dumplings during the session. They were also proud of what they had accomplished!



2022 DuanWu Festival Celebration Dinner

2022 DuanWu Festival celebration dinner was held on June 4th in South Burlington with 63 attendees. Traditionally, zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings) are eaten during DuanWu. VCS provided samplings of zongzi for everyone's enjoyment. Children were able to enjoy a variety of festival-related activities and face painting with dragon and dragon boat themes. Great fun meeting new and old friends!



2021 Summer Picnic

Oakledge Park, Burlington


Finally we are able to have an outing this summer since the pandemic started in March 2020. On July 24th, we had about 50 people attended the picnic at Oakledge Park in Burlington. What a beautiful summer day! Kids splashed out by the beach/rock area and played games in the park, adults catching up with each other. We also took this opportunity to welcome newcomers who moved to Vermont in the past year. It was a great meetup for everyone!



2019 Fall Hiking Trip

Niquette Bay State Park, Colchester


On October 12th, we headed out to Niquette Bay State Park in Colchester for your our fall hiking trip. It was a beautiful fall day with nice foliage. It was a 3.2 miles round trip hike and we have a group of 40 hikers. We enjoyed lunch at the sandy beach area.



2019 Spring BBQ

Red Rocks Park, South Burlington


On June 15th, we held a BBQ picnic at Red Rocks Park in South Burlington to celebrate the end of the academic year. We had a group of 72 people enjoying each other accompaniment and lunch on a beautiful spring day.



2019 Chinese New Year Celebration

Our annual Chinese New Year celebration was held at the cafeteria of Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School in South Burlington on February 3rd. The celebration includes traditional stage performances and new year luncheon. We had about 270 people attended the celebration to welcome the Year of Pig.



2025 Zongzi Wrapping Class 裹粽子

Zongzi 粽子 are traditionally eaten during Duanwu Festival, also known as Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. Zongzi is a traditional dish made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves. They are cooked by boiling. There are sweet and savory zongzi depending on the region of origin.


We made savory meat zongzi. It was fun tough it was not easy. We were proud of our accomplishment and everyone enjoyed their labor of love! We had 9 participants.



Spring Cultural Activities: Intro to Tai Chi

Tai chi 太极 is an ancient Chinese martial art and mind-body exercise that involves slow, gentle movements, controlled breathing and focused attention. It is know for its health benefits, including improved balance, flexibility and stress reduction. We had 10 participants.




Cook & Dine: Jiaozi (Chinese Chives & Pork Dumplings)

Jiaozi 饺子 is a type of Chinese dumpling. They are folded to resemble Chinese sycee and have great cultural significance in China. Jiaozi are one of the major dishes eaten during the Chinese New Year throughout northern China and is eaten all year round in the northern provinces. Jiaozi are popular in other parts of East Asia and in the Western world, where a fried variety is referred to as potstickers 煎饺.


Very proud of the group as we all managed to rolled out the dough, wrapped the dumplings with intricate pleats, and boiled them. Lastly, everyone enjoyed their labor of love! We had 8 participants.



Cook & Dine: Sheng Jian Bao (Shanghai Pan-Fried Buns)

Sheng Jian Bao 生煎包 is a type of small, pan-fried baozi (steamed buns) that is a Shanghai specialty. It is typically filled with pork and gelatin that melts into soup or liquid when cooked. They are also usually served with rice porridge 粥 and pickled mustard 榨菜.


Sheng Jian Bao session is one of our popular cooking class. We had 8 participants. It was definitely a great achievement to master the skills of making the buns with intricate pleats!



2024 Mooncake Making Class 做月饼

We held our annual mooncake making class and had a group of 7 participants. We made 3 different types of mooncakes: traditional mooncakes, Shanghai style mooncakes and snow skin mooncakes. Everyone managed to master the skill of making traditional mooncakes with the optimal crust-to-filling ratio of 3:7. Great fun and accomplishment for the afternoon!​

In China, plaza dancing is an exercise routine performed to music in the squares, plazas or parks. VCS hosted a plaza dancing session for families and friends to gather for a fun afternoon with 3 different dancing pace and style.

Friends and families gather for a fun afternoon of traditional Chinese games. Various games stations were set up throughout the hall. They were Chinese checkers 跳棋, Chinese chess 中国象棋, Go 围棋, Chinese army chess 军棋, animal chess 兽棋, mahjong 麻将, kick shuttlecock 毽子, cat's cradle, pick-up-sticks, etc.


There was approximately 50 attendees.

Chicken Curry is a very popular dish in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. People love it so much that they serve daily as well as during celebrations. Roti Jala is a savory crepe typically eaten alongside chicken curry. Roti Jala means “net bread” because of the net-like and lacy appearance.


We had 5 attendees and 5 take home orders!​



2023 Mooncake Making Class 做月饼

To celebrate the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, we held our annual mooncake making class and we had a group of 11 participants. We made 3 different types of mooncakes: traditional mooncakes, Shanghai style mooncakes and snow skin mooncakes. Very proud of the group as we all mastered the skill of making the traditional mooncake with the optimum crust-to-filling ratio of 3:7. What a great accomplishment!


We have participants as young as 4 years old who had fun making snow skin mooncakes.

To celebrate the upcoming Duanwu Festival, we held our annual zongzi wrapping class and we had a group of 10 participants. We made savory meat dumplings. It was fun and we were proud of our accomplishment!



Cook & Dine: Sheng Jian Bao 生煎包

Back by popular demand! We held a second Sheng Jian Bao (Shanghai Pan-fried Buns) session. We had 18 attendees and 3 take home orders!


We started with rolling out the dough, wrapped the buns with intricate pleats, and finally pan fried them. It was definitely a great achievement to master the skills for making the buns!



Cook & Dine: Beef Rendang with Nasi Lemak

马来西亚牛肉仁当配蓝花椰浆饭

Beef Rendang is a spicy, rich and creamy Malaysian/Indonesian stew made with beef, spices and coconut milk. Nasi Lemak is Malaysian coconut milk rice, served with sambal, fried crispy anchovies, toasted peanuts, hard boiled egg and cucumber. This version of coconut milk rice is infused with butterfly-pea flower extract to create a natural blue color rice. We'll all enjoy together after cooking.


We had 9 attendees and 13 take home orders!

Our second "Cook and Dine" class was to make fresh spring rolls, Hainanese chicken rice and egg tarts. Although it was a little ambitious, we managed to complete this 3-course meal.


We learn from poaching the chicken and cooking the rice to making three serving sauces. In addition to the main entree, we had a go at wrapping spring rolls and making cookie dough egg tarts. Fresh spring rolls are popular street food in Malaysia, Singapore, Medan and Taiwan. We had 26 attendees and 5 take home orders!



Cook & Dine: Sheng Jian Bao 生煎包

We had an awesome evening with our first "Cook and Dine" class as we make Sheng Jian Bao (Shanghai Pan-fried Buns). We had 30 attendees and 3 take home orders!


Very proud of the group as we all managed to roll out the dough, wrapped the buns with intricate pleats, and cooked them. Finally, everyone got to enjoy their labor of love!



Mooncake Making Class 做月饼

We had a fun-filled afternoon with our 2022 mooncake making class. Very proud of the group as we all managed to master the skill of making the traditional mooncakes with a crust-to-filling ratio of 3:6-7, where 3:7 is the optimum! Each Participant went home wit 3 different types of mooncakes: traditional mooncake with lotus seed paste, Shanghai style mooncake with red bean paste and snow skin mooncake with red bean paste. We started with dough making, then wrapping and molding, and finally baking the mooncakes.

The first cooking class of 2022. To celebrate the upcoming DuanWu Festival, we held a zongzi wrapping class in South Burlington and we have a group of 12 participants. Each participant brought their own fillings, while VCS supplied the glutinous rice, bamboo leaves and strings. Some made sweet zongzi and some made savory zongzi. It was a lot of fun!

Join the volunteers of Vermont Chinese School to learn and improve your Mandarin and make new friends. We meet every first and third Tuesdays of the month from 11am to 12pm in the Community Room. Registration is not required for this program. All are welcome!



FUMC - Cooking Class: Spring Rolls​


A new series of cooking demonstration classes held at Faith United Methodist Church in South Burlington. Our first class was making spring rolls. It was great hand-on experience! Spring rolls are usually savory rolls with vegetable fillings, sometimes with meat, inside a thinly wrapped cylindrical pastry. It is often served as an appetizer or snacks, and might be served deep fried or pan-fried, or fresh (unfried). Non-fried spring rolls are made by filling the wrapping with pre-cooked ingredients.
